The Next Step in my Photographic Journey by three member panel from PSM

image

The January2017 monthly meeting started with a silent prayer. Images of six of the PSM members were reviewed and comments given. A Panel consisting of senior members Mr. Jayanand, Mr. Raghavan and Mr.Vivekanand were answering to the member’s questions. Off late mirrorless cameras is gaining popularity. There were quite a few questions to the panel about mirrorless cameras.

Mr. Jayanand explained the difference between mirrorless cameras and DSLR.Members who have both mirrorless and DSLR were asked to explain their experience with mirrorless. DSLR has optical view finder and mirrorless has Electronic view finder.Electronic view finder shows what is seen in the sensor which is the advantage of mirrorless cameras Mirrorless cameras are light in weight compared to DSLR In most of the mirrorless cameras, optical stabilisation is built in the camera unlike DSLRs where it is in the lenses . Mirrorless cameras are the best for street photography. They don’t suit action and wildlife photography. Action photography is depended on speed, focus tracking and buffer. Buffer is comparatively slow in mirrorless than in DSLR.

Hence it is not so suitable for action genre Price wise, both the cameras are almost the same.Whatever be the gear, it is the person behind the camera that matters and not the gear. His creativity and composition makes the image outstanding and not the camera he is holding. Professionals dont get obsessed by the equipment.Off late, mobile cameras are also gaining popularity. Because of this compact segment is slowly dying.Even medium frame manufacturers are coming up with mirrorless cameras.Fuji and Hassleblad have released mirrorless medium frame cameras.Future is no doubt moving towards mirrorless camer as Next subject was street photography. The panel was addressing questions related to street photography

When we go for an organised photo walk, it is good to move alone to take pictures so that we don’t get influenced by others compositions and copy the same. Develop an eye for the theme. This will come out of practice. Listen and act on your mind’s voice. Once we do it regularly, it will get imbibed in us.

Try to compose in the view finder instead of taking the picture and cropping later. Use a prime lens. Moving closer to the subject makes composition better and easier. Compose in your own style to get unique pictures Anticipate actions in street and take pictures swiftly. Don’t spend too much time in framing. Take the first shot and then if we have time, we can go for the second one with proper framing so we don’t miss the moment. Don’t wait for organised photo walks. Go out often and take pictures. Always shoot in raw. Process it to your taste and style.

A raw picture without Post processing is equivalent to negatives in film era Check if there are no distracting elements in the frame. Look at the perimeter of the image before you shoot. This is important in wild life photography too. When it comes to photographing birds, a bird in flight is more interesting than a perching bird. Perching birds are for science books ,try to take pictures in dawn or dusk. Noon pictures are not good for any genre. When it comes to low light, avoid flash. Increase ISO or reduce Shutter speed and use a tripod to get good pictures.

Develop the habit of printing the images. Print at least four images every month. Printing brings out the flaws in the pictures. Any picture will look good in a monitor. Unless calibrated, each monitor shows the picture different. Print is the best way to see the images. Buy four frames and print your pictures and keep changing it every month. You can use A4 size clear folder and put our printed pictures too for our coffee table.PSM proposed for member’s display of printed pictures in the meetings for review Curt comments will help improving our skills. A Face book like will not help in improving When it came to question on Salon by PSM, it was informed that it is in Planning stage. Practice makes one perfect, Stop shooting for salons & start shooting for your satisfaction .The meeting ended with a vote of thanks for the panel
